Spain minimum wage 2026: how much it is and whether it is taxed

Updated on 30 September 2026 · By the NetoNómina team

The minimum interprofessional wage (salario mínimo interprofesional, SMI) is the lowest pay a worker can receive for a full-time job in Spain, whatever the sector or contract.

SMI amount in 2026

  • €1,221 gross a month in 14 payments.
  • €17,094 gross a year.
  • In 12 payments: €1,424.50 a month.

Part-time workers receive the proportional amount. For casual and seasonal workers and domestic employees there is also a minimum amount per day or hour worked.

How much is the SMI after deductions?

A worker on the SMI has 6.50% deducted for Social Security (permanent contract). Also, because the SMI is slightly above the tax-free withholding threshold for a single person with no children, the employer may withhold a small amount of IRPF. You can calculate your exact case with the net salary calculator.

Is the SMI subject to income tax?

In 2026 the Government approved an IRPF deduction so that people earning the minimum wage pay no tax on it. The key is that it works through the annual tax return, not on the payslip:

  • During the year the employer may still withhold some IRPF.
  • When you file your return, the deduction cancels that tax and the Tax Agency refunds what was over-withheld.

So if you earn the SMI and tax has been withheld, it is worth filing a return even if you are not required to: it is how you get that money back.

Hourly minimum wage

With 40 hours a week and about 1,800 working hours a year, the SMI is roughly €9.50 gross per hour. Work out your own hourly rate with the hourly wage calculator.
